"People who leave"
A 50-minute performance exploring the complexity of emotions linked to territory, movement and identity, combining flutes, electronics and personal accounts.
I was born in Corsica, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
For a long time, leaving my island to study, work and be free was the only alternative for the life I wanted to build for myself. So leaving was a necessity and required the greatest courage of all: the courage to choose myself. I needed to move to another land to find more fertile soil, better suited to certain stages of my life. But since then, I've felt uprooted. When you come from a place as deep-rooted as Corsica, the question of identity immediately arises. These questions came to me as soon as I arrived ‘elsewhere’.
I didn't realise that I was carrying all this complexity within me until I came face to face with otherness, until it exploded in my face, like a challenge to my entire being. I now know what I am: Mediterranean. I belong to a larger territory whose borders are defined by nature: where there are olive trees and tomatoes; where the wine is rougher and the skins tanned. I also know that things can change and evolve, that I follow those I meet.
Over the last few years, I've been keen to find out how these reflections can resonate with sound, and whether my relationship with the Mediterranean Sea has a similar echo in all of us. I had to find a way of gathering and translating the places where people migrate into sound. How can we perceive these transformations in others, and what sound material can we extract? In the organic substance of the land and sea, we sounded out and searched for the sonic traces of a migratory past. We also invited people passing through to question these notions. So my voice, my story, is no longer the sole bearer of these subjects, but resonates with others. We serve as a vector for these different existences, questioning the public in what is most complex and perhaps most secret: its own identity.
