Ebb and flow. Perpetual breaths of land or sea from which emerge the subtle, sometimes violent surges of matter in motion. Contemplation, meditation as well; for only thought can come to rest at the crest of these waves made of water or lava—unless it is within the hollow of their fading. What strange events, then, might be imagined during this fleeting transitional fraction of a second? As if caught between inhalation and exhalation—and vice versa. The breath halts before the moment of greatest effort, then dissolves, once the act is complete, into its imaginary universe.

Here, everything becomes music through the accordion—its bellows, the nimble fingers moving across its keyboards, from which arise the many events shaped by these silent transformations. Its inter-waves shimmer for a microsecond of eternity. And time stretches, allowing us to experience their becoming “other”: echoes of the Sheng—the ancient Chinese ancestor of the accordion with its colorful and poetic tones; interweavings of resonant registers and suspended time; near-media-like jingles reminding us that we live in a world of constant informational interaction.

Waves and inter-waves thus intersect in their resonance and continue the poetic, playful, passionate journey that has driven the composer for decades.

This new sonic flight is dedicated to Loris Douyez, who premiered it at the Accordéons-nous International Festival 2023.
