Echoes of Crossing Edges
For solo erhu and 10 instruments (2014)
This piece was conceived as an "echo" of my previous work, Crossing Edges, a Concerto for erhu (a Chinese two-strings fiddle) and orchestra, premiered in 2014, February, with the Liege Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and LU Yiwen, soloist from Shanghai and also member of the Shanghai Sinfonietta. Actually, these echoes try to summarize the dialectic found within the orchestral work by alternating two musical statements : the first making references to the echoes of the Chinese Music in my own imagination ; the second one trying to exteriorize the specific virtuosity of this magical instrument discovered in Shanghai under the wonderful fingers of Lu Yiwen - who became the dedicatee of the Concerto.
Finally, a musical work which is an echo of another echo... A great program !
Echoes of Crossing Edges was premiered in Belgium at the occasion of the "Chinese Days" of March 2014. Furthermore, the work received its Chinese premiere at the Concert Hall of the Shanghai Conservatory in April 2014, with the same performers : Lu Yiwen, solo erhu, and the members of the Shanghai Sinfonietta conducted by ZHANG Jiemin.
