In Rameau's day, the "Niais de Sologne" (the "Simpleton from Sologne") was someone "who deceives for his own gain, a sly fellow who pretends to be a simpleton, who is in fact well aware of his own interests, ans who often deceives others". The opening of the piece in no way anticipates the fiery pace of the ending, and yet, deduction is the key to everything...
