The Theory of Rajazz: A Musical Geometry

The theory of rajazz offers a new way of structuring musical material. It seeks to combine the modal approach of Indian ragas with the tendency to modulate characteristic of tonal music.

Rajazz comprises 155 pentatonic scales grouped into 31 families of 5 modes. The musical material is fixed—as in Indian ragas—but can be transposed into various keys, which amounts to creating “reflections of itself.” To modulate between these transpositions, one relies on a common “pivot” interval, which acts as a hinge.

In this context, geometry, graphs, and combinatorics serve as powerful tools for the composer. At the same time, the symbolism represented by certain geometric aspects of this system opens the door to an interpretation that goes beyond mere musical technique and connects it to a more holistic vision.

Although it falls within the realm of pure music theory, this theory does not imply any particular aesthetic and is intended for composers of all types of music, whether jazz, contemporary music, world music, or any other aesthetic or hybrid genre.

To explore this field, Manuel Hermia issued a call for scores, inviting composers who were interested to create new works based on this material and these organizational methods. Their submissions are compiled within the Rajazz Collective, which features a dedicated webpage and a player that allows users to explore all the works. The call for scores remains open.

This research lies at the intersection of art, scientific thought, geometry, and data visualization. It offers new ways to structure musical material as well as tools for transmitting this knowledge.

Using almost the same instrumental forces as their point of departure, these four composers arrive at strikingly different musical worlds. From Stefan Prins' amplified landscapes of glitch and sonic illusion and Pierre Slinckx's vibrant retro-pop timbres, to Eliott Delafosse's apocalyptic rhythmic machinery and Daan Janssens' mist-like textures, this programme traces four sharply contrasting paths through a shared instrumental terrain.

This project brings together the various areas of exploration Manuel Hermia has pursued in recent years. First, the compositions are all fundamentally inspired by the rajazz system. The project also seeks to strike a balance between the structure of the written parts and the completely improvised sections, as well as between acoustic and electronic sounds, and between melodic-harmonic material and non-idiomatic sound textures.
Finally, the quest for spiritual interiority and rhythmic trances come together to strive for an expression of intensity that is at once raw, honest, committed, and wild.

Brecht Valckenaers (b. 2000, Leuven) is a versatile pianist and composer who combines his love for

classical and contemporary repertoire with his own compositions and improvisations.

He studied for eight years with Nikolaas Kende at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and is

currently continuing his studies with Claudio Martínez Mehner at the Hochschule für Musik Basel

and Eliso Virsaladze at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.

Brecht has won prizes at several competitions, including the Steinway Piano Competition,

Cantabile Piano Competition, Breughel Piano Competition, Concours de Piano Andrée Charlier,

and the EPTA Piano Competition. In 2025, he received the Third Prize and the Prize for the Best

Performance of a Dutch Work at the YPF European Piano Competition in Amsterdam. He has

appeared as a soloist with orchestra and has performed in venues such as Bozar, Flagey, deSingel,

Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, and Bimhuis Amsterdam.

His compositions – characterized by a strong rhythmic inventiveness – have been featured several

times on national radio and are enthusiastically received on YouTube.

After a celebrated appearance at Festival 20·21 in 2024 with his project Ex Nihilo, Brecht is

delighted to continue his collaboration with the festival as Artist in Residence. Over the next

editions, Brecht will perform all of Ligeti’s works in which the piano takes centre stage, alongside

other projects.

His project Ex Nihilo is released as an album in February 2026 on Antarctica Records.

Driven by a desire to keep exploring and pushing his musical boundaries, Brecht approaches

music as a language to be experienced in all its forms: reading and reciting through the

performance of classical and contemporary repertoire, speaking through improvisation, and

writing through composition.

Brecht gratefully acknowledges the support of the Stichting Robus and the SWUK, with which he

is Artist in Residence.
