Deux Itinérances
For bass clarinet (or saxophone), violin, and piano (2019–22)
I. A toi, la femme japonaise (To You, the Japanese Woman)
II. Iro ga mazareba mazaru hodo (The More Colors Blend, the More They Become One)

These two pieces are the result of a revised transcription and adaptation for the above-mentioned instruments of an earlier work for voice, bass clarinet (or saxophone), and piano, Trois Itinérances (Three Wanderings), composed for a trio of Japanese musicians and premiered in Tokyo in 2016.

The original three pieces address the question of tragedy in the central movement, while the two surrounding movements offer positive antidotes. In Piece I, this hope takes the form of poetic, passionate, and tender reflections that idealize the Japanese woman. Piece III, in symmetrical fashion, is guided by the evocative, colorful, and nostalgic sonorities of an imagined Japanese city. Hence the subtle allusions to certain traditional musical idioms of a distant East.

Deux Itinérances (Two Wanderings) thus focuses on Pieces I and III, exploring their formal symmetries while setting aside the more tragic element in order to express the colors of hope. A version for violin, saxophone, and piano was premiered in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 2019 by the Sargo Ensemble. The version for violin, bass clarinet, and piano received its premiere in Brussels in 2023 by the Trio Erämaa.

The original work was composed with the support of the Federation Wallonia–Brussels.
