His compositions give rise to sensual, spiritual worlds of sound, rich in relationships and meaning. Born a few days after the death of Stalin in what was then Leningrad, Kissine studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and has lived in Belgium since 1990. His violin concerto is dedicated to Kremer, who brought it to Brussels in 2012. One of the first consecutive performances was conducted in Berlin by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, who first introduced Kissine to the Gewandhaus Orchester's programme on her debut. The Lithuanian conductor also tirelessly shows her solidarity by performing the music of Ukrainian composers. Valentin Silvestrov himself was among the singers and prayers who marched on Independence Square in Kiev in 2014, and dedicated poignant choruses to the protest movement that still bring comfort and hope today.’
